  Also within walking distance is the Flecker Botanical Garden, a world heritage site. We would often start our day with a walk or short hike in the cool green of this park, which features many species of tropical plants.

  Julie and Jesse were our kind and generous hosts. The B&B is located on the first floor of their home. There are two spacious bedrooms as well as a living room, kitchen area and an outdoor shaded patio surrounding the beautiful private pool lined with tropical plants. For breakfast, we were treated to coffee cake, French press coffee, yogurts, fresh breads and a variety of local fruits. After a day of snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef or touring Port Douglas along with the other local day trips, we looked forward to a glass of wine or beer from our refrigerator and relaxing by the pool or in the lounge.

  We recently had the opportunity to spend four nights at Galvin’s Edge Hill during a June 2017 family trip to Australia. Tucked in a quiet neighborhood, this B&B is a relaxing oasis in close proximity to downtown Cairns. A short drive from the airport and the many restaurants and ferries that line the Cairns waterfront, there are also several great coffee shops and restaurants such as NOA (featuring tapas) or Samgasat (offering incredible Thai food), both are within walking distance.

  So if you are planning a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, we recommend you stay clear of the formulaic hotels and treat yourself to a homey five-star B&B experience at Galvin’s Edge Hill. You won’t regret it!
